Why Choose Local Honey?
Local honey is a fantastic natural sweetener that offers many health and environmental benefits. It’s pure and unprocessed, making it a great alternative to refined sugars. Many people find that consuming local honey can help alleviate seasonal allergies, as it contains small amounts of local pollen. Plus, supporting local beekeepers helps promote pollination and sustain the environment, all while enjoying its robust flavor in your favorite foods!
When it comes to honey, choosing local not only supports the local environment and local businesses, but also offers advantages for your health.
Health Benefits of Local Honey
Local bees produce local honey, meaning the pollen they gather and bring back to the hive is sourced from local plants. As many seasonal allergies are caused by these same plants, consuming honey containing that pollen may help alleviate allergies. While formal studies on the effects of local honey on allergies are lacking, the concept of trace exposure to allergens to desensitize food allergies is a popular practice.
Another benefit of local honey is that it’s unprocessed and pure. The honey found in grocery stores is often filtered, a process that removes trace amounts of pollen it might contain. It can also be blended from multiple sources, or even blended with sugar water. The purer the honey, the stronger its health benefits, such as potential anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
Environment Benefits of Local Honey
The honey produced at Hoot Acre Farm has robust flavors, created from local wildflowers, trees and palmetto. In addition to making delicious hone, our bees help pollinate local plants and benefit local wildlife.
Supporting local honey also helps our local bee population. With bees currently endangered, it’s helpful to support local bee farmers who are working to raise and maintain healthy bees.
Using Local Honey
Honey is best enjoyed in moderation. You don’t have to consume a whole jar in one go to benefit from it. Just a spoonful a day during allergy season can make a difference. You can use honey in various ways, such as adding it to sauces, using it as a sugar substitute in baking, or mixing it into fruit smoothies. You can try drizzling honey on top of sharp cheese, adding it to plain Greek yogurt for a healthy dessert, or using it as a natural sweetener for lemonades and iced tea.
Keep in mind that for the health benefits of local honey, it’s best to keep it raw and unheated. And it’s good to know that honey never goes bad and can last for years.
Nothing is better for the human being than to add the right amount of honey to his food.
