Purple orchid tree is beautiful when in bloom — and it blooms for several months. The flowers make their first appearance in late winter while the trees is bare of leaves, and last until early summer. The tree is used as a street tree, shade tree, specimen or focal tree in tropical and subtropical landscapes.

The purple orchid tree is listed as an invasive species by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council because it displaces native vegetation in hammock margins.
