Cute, whimsical, weird and unique describe the ponytail palm – not actually a palm at all, but a succulent palm-like relative of the yucca. The ponytail is sometimes called “Elephant Foot Tree” because the swollen gray base looks like an elephant’s foot. Mature ponytail palm trees bloom with white flower clusters and then branch out to form new heads.

This beauty grows along Sarasota’s infamous North Trail.
