While there are thousands varieties of bananas around the world, only the Cavendish variety of Chiquita Banana fame make it to the produce section of the grocery store. Cavendish bananas are harvested before fully ripe, and ripened with gas in a container while en route to the supermarket. Not very appetizing.
Growing bananas is easy in Florida. Backyard bananas, just picked off the tree, are sweeter and juicier than what we’re used to eating from the grocery store. The ice cream banana is sweet with a hint of vanilla. It is fluffy and creamy, and practically melts in your mouth. We freeze the bananas we don’t eat off the tree and use them in our breakfast smoothies.
