Elderberry is a native shrub found in moist open places. This one’s growing on the bank of the drainage ditch along the back of Hoot Acre Farm. The fragrant flowers of Elderberry appear in large, relatively flat clusters from spring through fall. Elderberry produces hanging clusters of blue-black, fleshy berries. The berries are toxic when raw, but edible when cooked.
